House in Takayama

Overview

This project was the renovation of the main house of a tea ceremony master and his wife and young children. The tea master is from a 500-year line of masters since the latter half of the Heian period of Japanese history. It started with Yamato no Takayama Souzei, who started the school of tea ceremony with the advice of an important temple priest and tea master Murata Juukou.

In order to make dark and divided interior into a bright and airy home, I removed the hallway to join the dining-kitchen area and the tatami mat Japanese style room into one.
