Overview
This home was designed for a couple, in a suburb of Nabari city, Mie prefecture. The piece of land is in a green and hilly residential area.
The site has a rounded edge on the east side, and is roughly triangular. On the other side of the road to the east is a forested area. One dream of the owner was to live in a house with an outside bath, to sit in and relax as he looks out on nature. The other dream was to have a studio where he could play music as loud as he likes with his fellow band members.
When he brought this project to me, the owner was concerned about the irregular shape of the site, but I decided to let the shape work for the plan. I made the studio of soundproof reinforced concrete, and in a radiating shape placed horizontal beams along the shape of the site, allowing the concrete to support them. As a result, it became possible to open the plan up to the forest on the east side. I put the outdoor bath on top of the concrete slab roof of the studio, and while bathing, the occupant can enjoy a view of nature, without worrying about others’ eyes. This became a delightfully enjoyable space.
